Project 2: Personal Shrines

This week Project 2 has begun. Over the weekend, the students were asked to write about who they would like to “enshrine.” They could choose a person, place or thing. Though some students asked if they could enshrine “fear” or other emotions. We thought that was interesting and the teacher, Ms. Burns, okayed the request. The Project 2 handout can be downloaded here.

In this project, the teacher will demonstrate many more jewelry techniques such as riveting, dapping, disc cutting or rolling out metal (for a thinner consistency) to build a “house” for the enshrined. I will be interested to watch how the students negotiate more technical processes with design thinking and their own identity elements.

This project will also require them to create and use original imagery. They are not allowed to take others work in anyway. They can draw, paint, photograph, collage, etc. Hopefully their earlier work, in discovering their own aesthetics and identity, will inform their process.
